Children's Health

At any stage of a child’s life, there are a few common things that will have a varied affect on them. What will affect one child will not necessarily have the same effect on another child within the same family unit. The same is said for treatments because each child is unique in their “genetic makeup”.

The common things I see in my clinic are closely related to food, environmental components, sleep and less often emotional upsets. I have not come across anyone with only one of these elements being the cause of the health concern; it’s always been a combination of two or more elements. So let’s look briefly at these elements.

Food

Food allergies and intolerances can be the major cause of child health issues. For example some children will have a severe reaction to wheat. This is easily recognised and amended. Some children will only have a very subtle reaction which is usually mistaken for bad behaviour or something’s “not quite right with them”.

In fact it would be fair to say behaviour problems are the first sign that there is intolerance to one or more foods. Some times if these signs are missed or dismissed, other problems, such as inflammation and skin problems, will appear. Being well informed about the food your child is eating is a great step in the right direction.

Environmental

Things like everyday hair care and personal hygiene products that children come in contact with can pose problems. Products other people use can affect them as well. Most of these products contain some really nasty chemicals which have an accumulative affect. Children’s organs, and ours for that matter, become overloaded and heavy metals accumulate in their organs affecting their function. This can be addressed easily by changing the products your children use. There are many safe products on the market at very reasonable prices.

Sleep

Sleep is as important as food, water and oxygen to the human body. This is the time at which our body regenerates and repairs. Our brain needs this time to process the day’s events. People who are deprived of sleep suffer physically, emotionally and intellectually. But nobody knows how sleep restores the brain.

So the next question is; are your children getting enough? If not; why not? It could be to do with food and/ or toxic overload.

Babies

At this stage, growth is extremely rapid and organs are still developing. Organs start to function effectively after the age of two. The function of the liver and kidneys are to filter our blood and convert dangerous and damaging chemicals into safe ones. For this reason we need to be mindful of what we put in our babies bodies.

The best defense is to be very well informed about food, vaccinations and baby products. Look at what’s in them and what effects these chemicals can have on a baby whose organs don’t work properly yet.

If colic is keeping you and your baby up all night then look at (if you breast feed) what you are eating and if you bottle feed look at changing your formula. There are quite a few natural things you can do and give to your baby that do not have harmful chemicals in them.

Toddlers and prepubescent children

By now toddlers will have been eating for a good year or so. This is the time children are likely to develop a range of conditions from allergies to behaviour problems. However, for some children they are one and the same. Children of school age have slowed their rate of growth significantly, however now’s the time for brain power.

They learn such a lot now, not just school work but socially too. There are plenty of things you can do to support your children during this period of their life. It really comes down to the afore-mentioned things. Food will have a huge influence on them from a physical and emotional point of view. Sleep and personal care products play a role as well.

Teens

Puberty brings along with it an increase of hormones and generally for most parents a time of crossing your fingers hoping you are providing your teen with everything he or she needs to cope with this mostly scary time of fluctuating hormones. Every teen’s hormone production is different and what will work for one may not work for another. Their body is its own diagnostic tool. It will show you what you need to know, the trick is you just need to know how to read it correctly.
