ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY
What do Kindred Health Speechies do?
We offer the following programs:
-
Parent programs:
-
Circle of Security (COS-P) - A program for caregivers, that is focused on helping reflect upon children’s attachment needs in order to promote secure attachment with a child. It helps with setting the foundation for social competence and promoting effective emotional regulation and responding to stress and behaviours.
-
Tuning into Kids - It teaches parents and caregivers skills in emotion coaching. Emotion coaching as defined by John Gottman is a way of responding to emotions that can help children to understand, regulate and work through their emotions so that they manage their behaviour and respond in socially appropriate ways.
-
-
Literacy program:
-
Sounds Write Program- Is a very highly structured, multi-sensory, incremental and code-oriented, instructional approach to teaching children to read and spell. The Sounds-Write program provides very fast and effective teaching for children at all literacy levels.
-
-
Speech sounds: Typically, this means the young person or adult is having difficulties saying sounds in words, mixing up sounds within words or are unclear and difficult to understand.
-
Language skills and Social skills: Language is broad and can include: Receptive language i.e., listening/taking in information and understanding it and Expressive language i.e., talking, using words and sentences to express our thoughts, share ideas, socialise, tell stories and jokes.
-
Fluency: Stuttering is characterised by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongation of sounds, and interruptions or pauses known as 'blocks'. We can assess and provide different therapy options for children, young people and adults who stutter.
-
Literacy development: We support literacy by conducting comprehensive assessments to identify specific areas of difficulty in reading, writing and spelling. These assessments may include evaluating a person's phonological and phonemic awareness, expressive and receptive language skills, and listening/reading comprehension.
-
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): We provide assessment and therapy for AAC users and can support children and adults in getting AAC if they are having trouble communicating and we can help them replace or support natural speech and language. This may be through pictures, words, gestures, body language, assistive technology devices and key word signs.

PRE-SCHOOL SCREENERS
Kindred Health Services has worked with many public schools, schools for specific purposes, day care centres and preschools in Sydney to help identify children who may benefit from assessment and therapy referrals- either to a Psychologist, Occupational therapist, Speech therapist or to a GP (General Practitioner).
We work closely with schools, staff and parents to provide information on how to access help and where to go, especially when there are concerns about the child's development.
During this process, we screen various areas such as:

-
Speech sounds
-
Language skills
-
Play/Social skills
-
Behaviour
-
Oral motor development
-
Socio-Emotional well being
-
Sensory preferences
